Danny Devito turns 79 today

Actor, director, producer and filmmaker, Danny Devito is one of the world’s most popular actors ever since he rose to stardom with a string of hit movies during the 1980’s. Born in Neptune Township, New Jersey on November 17, 1944, he first gained prominence by appearing alongside Jack Nicholson in the acclaimed 1975 movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and for his portrayal of the taxi dispatcher Louie De Palma in the 1970’s/80’s hit series “Taxi”, which earned him a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award. During the 1980’s his career skyrocketed to international success by appearing a in a string of blockbusters, mainly comedies such as “Terms of Endearment” (1983), “Romancing the Stone” and it’s sequel “The Jewel of the Nile” alongside Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in 1984/85, “Throw Momma from the Train” (1987), “Twins” (1988) and “The War of the Roses” (1989) where once again teamed up with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The 1990’s brought Devito one of his signature roles, as the villain Penguin in the 1992 “Batman Returns” and more blockbusters including “Get Shorty” (1995), “Matilda” alongside his ex-wife actress Rhea Perlman (1996), “Mars Attacks!” (1996), “L.A. Confidential” (1997) and “Man on the Moon” (1999). Over the last two decades Devito also has worked extensevely as a producer and director and keeps scoring blockbusters such as “Wiener-Dog” (2016), and most recently “Dumbo” (2019) and the TV series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. Devito’s short stature is the result of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (Fairbank’s disease), a rare genetic disorder that affects bone growth, but instead of a hurdle in his acting career, it became the opposite, helping Devito to win significant lead roles in movies and series since the 1970’s. Today Danny Devito turns 79.
