Mötley Crüe’s bass boss Nikki Sixx turns 65 today
One of Rock’s most famous bassists, Nikki Sixx was born on December 11, 1958 in San Jose, California. Sixx grew up listening to Deep Purple, Harry Nilsson, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Queen, and later discovered T.Rex, David Bowie and Slade. While living in Jerome, Idaho, he became a teenage vandal, breaking into neighbors’ homes, shoplifting, and being expelled from school for selling drugs. At the age of 17, Sixx moved to Los Angeles, and began various jobs such as working at a liquor store; in 1981, Sixx founded Mötley Crüe with drummer Tommy Lee. After Vince Neill and Mick Mars join the band as singer and guitarist, the band went on to become one of the most successful Rock acts during the 1980’s, leading the movement known as Hair Metal/Glam Metal. They released their first album in 1981 “Too Fast for Love”, after they were signed by Elektra they released “Shout At The Devil” in 1983 which included the hits”Looks That Kill” , “Shout At The Devil” and “Too Young to Fall in Love”, the album launched the band into Rock stardom, and was followed by the also commercially successful “Theatre Of Pain” in 1985, “Girls, Girls, Girls” in 1987 featuring the smash hit “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Dr. Feelgood” in 1989 that included “Dr. Feelgood” and “Kickstart My Heart”. One of the most worldwide popular Rock bands in the world during the 1980’s, Mötley Crüe went through a lower period in their career during the 1990’s, not just because of drug addictions involving the members in the band as well as several personal and public scandals, but also because of the Alternative Rock music and Grunge Rock rise during the early 1990’s which dictated the end of the Hair Metal bands. Sixx wrote most of Mötley Crüe’s material, including tracks such as “Live Wire”, “Home Sweet Home”, “Girls, Girls, Girls”, “Kickstart My Heart”, “Wild Side”, “Hooligan’s Holiday” and “Dr. Feelgood”. The band called it quit recently with their goodbye tour which ended in 2016. Sixx has also worked with a number of artists and groups, co-writing and/or producing songs, such as Sex Pistols’s guitarist Steve Jones, Lita Ford, Alice Cooper, and Meat Loaf among many others. In September 2007, Sixx released a book titled “The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star”, a collection of his journal entries from 1986 and 1987 (when his heroin addiction was at its most dangerous). In 2006 Sixx formed the group Sixx:A.M, initially to record an audio accompaniment to his autobiography The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star, aside of all the projects with other bands and artists, Sixx has a successful Radio show. In 2019 Netlifx premiered the biopic “The Dirt” based on the Sixx and Motley Crue’s career throughout the 1980’s, from his own biography. Mötley Crüe’s back on the road, currently touring with a new guitarist. Today he turns 65.
