Written by music producer Liam Sternberg who wrote the song after seeing people on a ferry walking awkwardly to keep their balance, “Walk Like An Egyptian” was one of The Bangles greatest hits worldwide. The song was released in 1986 and it reached the Hot 100 No.1 on December 20th, 1986; it also was No.1 in several music charts around the world. But The Bangles were not the first choice of Sternberg to interpret the song, he first offered it to Toni Basil who rejected it and then to Lene Lovich that after recording an initial version decided to make a break on her music career. Only then the song was proposed to The Bangles, whom already had scored a big hit earlier that year with “Manic Monday”, a song written by Prince that reached No.2 on the Hot 100. The success of both songs propelled The Bangles second album “Different Light” to number two on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the group’s most successful album and giving them worldwide success. The famous music video for “Walk Like an Egyptian” was nominated for Best Group Video at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, the street scenes were filmed in New York City and it featured people dancing in a pose similar to the pose depicted in the Ancient Egyptian reliefs.
