Samuel L. Jackson was born in Washington, D.C. on December 21, 1948, and during his college days in the late 1960’s, he was an activist for civil rights, and after the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackson attended the funeral in Atlanta as one of the ushers. In 1969 he got in problem with the law, when he started to be associated with the Black Panther movement. That year, Jackson and and several other students held members of the Morehouse College board of trustees hostage on the campus, demanding reform in the school’s curriculum and governance. Jackson was charged with and eventually convicted of unlawful confinement, a second-degree felony, being suspended for two years for his criminal record and his actions. Was around that prior that his mother sent him to Los Angeles after the FBI told her that he would die within a year if he remained with the Black Power movement. Until recently, Jackson continues to deny ever having been a member of the Black Panther Party. Later, in 1972, he returned to the college to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Drama, starting his professional acting career shortly after that, first as a stage actor.
Jackson started to get noticed by movie fans across the world by appearing in a string of hits during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s that included “Coming To America” (1987), “Goodfellas” (1990, Jungle Fever (1991), “Patriot Games” (1992), “Amos & Andrew” (1993), “True Romance” (1993) and “Jurassic Park” (1993). During that period, Jackson started to work with Quentin Tarantino, first in the 1994 “Pulp Fiction”, which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also worked with Tarantino in “Jackie Brown” (1997), “Django Unchained” (2012), and “The Hateful Eight” (2015). A highly prolific actor, throughout his career, Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in over 150 films and he’s ranked as the highest all-time box office star with over $7.1 billion total US box office gross, an average of $89.9 million per film. Samuel L. Jackson’s likeness was used for the Ultimate version of the Marvel Comics character Nick Fury, and subsequently, the actor played Fury in eleven Marvel Cinematic Universe films beginning with a cameo appearance in “Iron Man” (2008). Today he celebrates 75.
