Remembering the Hollywood legend Humphrey Bogart
An absolute Hollywood icon, the charismatic Humphrey Bogart was born in New York City on December 25, 1899. The actor began his acting career in Broadway shows but moved quickly to the then rising industry of movies, debuting in the 1930 film “Up the River” alongside Spencer Tracy. During that era, Bogart’s majority of roles were playing gangsters, due to his resemblance to John Dillinger. “The Petrified Forest” (1936), was his big break into the Warner Bros. gangster pantheon. As the 1940’s approached and his popularity rose, Bogart began to be featured in lead roles, reaching the stardom with the 1941 classic “High Sierra”, where he played a gangster for the last time. Also in that year, he starred, playing a detective, in what is considered one of the most influential films of all time, “Maltese Falcon”, also one of the first great film noirs. His signature role happened alongside Ingrid Bergman in the cult classic “Casablanca” (1942), but filming the pair involved efforts to mask the fact Bergman was taller than Bogart. The movie, a Best Picture Academy Award Winner, landed Humphrey Bogart his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Around this time, the 43 year old Bogart met the 19 year old beauty Lauren Bacall, and the couple fell madly in love for each other, leading Bogart to divorce from his third wife and marry Bacall. They became one of Hollywood’s most iconic pairs, and throughout the years they were together appeared side by side in films such as “The Big Sleep” (1946), “Dark Passage” (1947), and “Key Largo” (1948). In 1948 he appeared in “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” (1948), as a paranoid gold prospector, and “In a Lonely Place” (1950), as a screenwriter suspected of murder, films that are today considered to be his best, The legend finally got his well deserved Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in “The African Queen” (1951). During the last years of his career, the 50 year old Bogart competed with William Holden for Audrey Hepburn in “Sabrina” (1954) and “The Barefoot Contessa” with Ava Gardner. Humphrey Bogart passed away in 1957, at age 57 from esophageal cancer. He was born 124 years ago today.
