The much awarded and acclaimed actor, director, and producer Denzel Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York on December 28, 1954. Ever since the 1980’s that Washington has graced the audiences with his talent to portray complex and historical figures, and his versatility as an actor makes it easier for him to portray the roles of men such as the South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in Cry Freedom 1987, Muslim minister and human rights activist Malcolm X in Malcolm X 1992 or a corrupt detective such as in Training Day 2001, a performance that earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor, prior to that he got the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing a former slave turned soldier in Glory 1989. During the 1990’s Denzel Washington’s career skyrocketed to international fame and increasingly started to play more lead roles. In 1993 he played the support role of a lawyer who is confronted with his own prejudice, when he’s hired to defend a gay man suffering from AIDS, played by Tom Hanks in the movie Philadelphia. Throughout the rest of the decade, Washington worked prolifically in several blockbusters, including the biopic The Hurricane in 1999. For over the last two decades movies such as Remember the Titans and Training Day have been among his best, and he continues to surprise us with his versatility as an actor. Overall, Washington has received two Golden Globe awards, one Tony Award and two Academy Awards among many other awards and several nominations including a string of Academy Awards nominations since the 1980’s. Recently in 2018 he returned to the stage, playing Theodore “Hickey” Hickman in a Broadway revival of Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh, which ran for 14 weeks.
