1990’s supermodel Christy Turlington is 55 today
The long-time creative director of American Vogue magazine, Grace Coddington has described Turlington as “the most beautiful woman in the world.” The model, who turns 51 today, was part of the exclusive 1990’s supermodel group that featured among others Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Claudia Schiffer, was born in Oakland, California on January 2, 1969. Though she came to prominence during the 1990’s, her modeling career started when she was a teenager in the 1980’s, at 17 she appeared on Duran Duran’s 1986 music video “Notorious”. In 1989 she represented the iconic Calvin Klein’s Eternity campaign, reprising it again in 2014. Turlington attracted the big fashion houses and stylists at the time, working for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace and Valentino among several others. She also appeared throughout her career on the covers of fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Marie Claire. In 1990, at the beginning of the supermodel era, Christy Turlington starred in the famous George Michael music video “Freedom’90” together with Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Tatjana Patitz, a video that launched the supermodel era of the 90’s. Turlington has also used her popularity and influence for humanitarian causes, in 2010, she founded Every Mother Counts, a non-profit organization devoted to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother and in 2013 directed the documentary film Every Mile, Every Mother, which explores Every Mother Counts’ participation in long distance running to highlight distance from healthcare providers as barriers to women receiving quality care.
