One of the biggest music festivals in the world, Rock In Rio, kicked off 39 years ago today
On January 11th, 1985 the first Rock In Rio festival was held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The festival, which was claimed to be the biggest ever staged, featured some of the best Rock acts gathered during 10 days in front of an estimated crowd of 1.4 million people. The first day of the concert was headlined by Queen and also featured Iron Maiden and Whitesnake. Throughout the 10 days that the festival was held, names such as Rod Stewart, The Go-Gos, Nina Hagen, James Taylor, AC/DC, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Yes and The B52’s among others. Some of the acts, such as Queen and Ozzy Osbourne appeared more than one day of the festival.
During the 2000’s, the festival moved to Europe and was held in Lisbon, Portugal for the first time in 2004. Subsequently it was also held in Madrid, Spain for the first time in 2008 and in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2015, however it is still held in it’s original city Rio De Janeiro. In 2022 was held for the 9th time in Lisbon, Portugal.
