Zack de la Rocha, the lead singer of the 1990’s politically charged Alternative/Metal band Rage Against the Machine celebrates 54 today
Born in Long Beach, California on January 12, 1970, Zack de la Rocha became famous back in the early 1990’s as the lead singer for Alternative/Metal band Rage Against The Machine who back then were notable for their political protest songs with explosive and controversial lyrics. The band came to prominence with their successful debut album “Rage Against the Machine” released in 1992 and that included the songs “Killing in the Name” and “Bullet in the Head”. In 1996 they released an also successful follow up “Evil Empire” featuring another hit for the band “Bulls on Parade”. One of the most influential bands of the 90’s, Rage Against the Machine disbanded in 2000 but reunited in 2007, 2008 and for a final show in 2011; the band will soon be reunited again for a 2020 summer tour. Zack, co-founded One Day as a Lion in 2008 with former Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore, but was with Rage Against the Machine one of the most politically charged bands ever to receive extensive airplay from radio and MTV that he sti l is mostly associated with. Aside of being a singer and musician, Zack de la Rocha is also an activist who advocates in favor of Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and the Zapatista (EZLN) movement in Mexico. He spoke on the floor of the UN, testifying against the United States and its treatment of Abu-Jamal. Particularly outspoken on the cause of the EZLN, his Chicano identity influenced the band’s attitude and lyrics on the struggles of immigrants, people of color, and the Zapatistas. He renamed the People’s Resource Center in Highland Park to the Centro de Regeneracion. Today Zack celebrates 54.
