A Brief Overlook on Cary Grant’s life and career
Born Archibald Alec Leach in Horfield, Bristol, England on January 18, 1904, Cary Grant started his career at age six as a Vaudevillian actor performing with a troupe known as “The Penders”. At 16 he traveled to the U.S on tour with the Pender Troupe and with the success he made with group, acclaimed by New York City audiences and critics, Grant made the decision of staying in the U.S establishing a name for himself in vaudeville in the 1920’s and touring the United States before moving to and settling in Hollywood in the early 1930’s. It was during that period that his movie career begun, appearing in a series of well received films, but it wasn’t until the 1940’s that he solidified his Hollywood stardom, when he developed a close working relationship with director Alfred Hitchcock, who cast him in several of his critically acclaimed films, including Suspicion (1941), Notorious (1946), To Catch a Thief (1955), and North by Northwest (1959). Toward the end of his film career, the actor was praised by critics as a romantic leading man. He received five nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, including Indiscreet (1958) with Ingrid Bergman, That Touch of Mink (1962) with Doris Day, and Charade (1963) with Audrey Hepburn but was never awarded an Oscar despite being one of the biggest Hollywood stars at the time. After retiring from the film industry in 1966, Cary Grant pursued numerous business interests, and in 1970 was presented with an Honorary Oscar by his friend Frank Sinatra at the 42nd Academy Awards in 1970. Cary Grant passed away in 1986 at age 82. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Cary Grant the second greatest male star of Golden Age Hollywood cinema.
