In 1986 the Norwegian band A-ha were riding the high waves of international success, following the planetary popularity of their smash hit “Take on Me” in 1985. Released on December 16, 1985, “The Sun Always Shines On TV” was the third single taken from their debut album “Hunting High And Low” and is regarded as one of their finest songs. Written by guitarist Pål Waaktaar, who was the band’s main songwriter, “The Sun Always Shines On TV” is regarded by some critics as a song superior to “Take on Me”, however, not in popularity, but on January 25, 1986 peaked to No.1 in the U.K, whilst “Take on Me” had only reached No.2 on the British music charts. In the U.S it only peaked to No.20 on the Hot 100. As critic Tim DeGravine of Allmusic stated “If ever a 1980’s song qualified as Wall of Sound, “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” would be it”. Overall, the song proved to be another hit for the Norwegian band, and to go along with it, they produced another stunning music video, which opens with a short sequence as an epilogue to the video for “Take On Me”, the band’s previous single. Directed by Steve Barron and filmed at Udney Hall Gardens and the Victorian Gothic Church of Saint Alban the Martyr, Richmond upon Thames, in England, this opening used also the rotoscoped animation to form a transition from “Take on Me”. Their following music video, made for the band’s next single, “Train of Thought”, would pick up from the ending of this one, making a visual & story trilogy of “Take On Me”, “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” and “Train of Thought”. A-ha would still produced several hits throughout the 1980’s, though none became as successful as “Take on Me” and “The Sun Always Shines On TV”
