In 1997 Blur’s single “Beetlebum” debuts at No.1 on the U.K charts
“Beetlebum” is perhaps the most Beatlesque of all Blur songs. Back in 1997, when the Brit Pop trend was slowly fading away as the 1990’s came to an end, the famous “rivalry” between the main leading bands of the movement, Blur, and Oasis, still endured. However, Blur was able to do with “Beetlebum” what The Beatles fans Oasis were never able to do: according to Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic, the song “(ran) through the “White Album” in the space of five minutes”. Composed by Blur and released as the lead single for the band’s eponymous fifth album, “Blur”, according to lead singer Damon Albarn, the song is about heroin and the drug experiences he had with his then-girlfriend, Justine Frischmann of Elastica. Albarn has stated in an interview with MTV that the song describes a complicated emotion, sort of ‘sleepy’ and sort of ‘sexy’. The single debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart on February 1st, 1997, becoming Blur’s second track to reach the top of the charts after “Country House”. It became one of the most popular Blur songs, not only in the U.K but all over Europe.
