“Super Freak” Rick James was born on this day in 1948
Funk singer Rick James was born on February 1st, 1948 in Buffalo, New York. He started his professional musical career during the late 1960’s in the California Rock scene where he became acquainted with some of the most famous musicians at the time. During the 1970’s James experimented with several different musical genres, crossing those with Funk, as an example, he claimed to have created “Punk Funk”. It wasn’t until 1981 that he scored his biggest hit and signature song, “Super Freak”, which peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and sold over 1 million copies. The song had a resurgence during the early 1990’s when M.C Hammer used its sample for “U Can’t Touch This”. Rick James passed away on August 6th, 2004, from pulmonary failure and cardiac failure, associated with his various health conditions of diabetes, a stroke, pacemaker, and heart attack. His autopsy found alprazolam, diazepam, bupropion, citalopram, hydrocodone, digoxin, chlorpheniramine, methamphetamine, and cocaine in his blood.
