The Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo turns 58 today
Robert Emile DeLeo was born on February 2nd, 1966 in New Jersey. The famous bass player formed Stone Temple Pilots in 1985 with singer Scott Weiland, drummer Erik Kretz and his brother and guitarist Dean DeLeo. During the early 1990’s, Stone Temple Pilots became one of the biggest Alternative Rock bands in the world, and though not from Seattle, they were labeled as Grunge due to their heavy sound reminiscent of the Seattle Grunge bands of the era. They released their first album “Core” in 1992 that featured some of their biggest hits such as “Plush”, “Creep”, “Crackerman”, “Sex Type Thing” and “Dead & Bloated”. In 1994 the band released “Purple” which was again another sales success featuring “Interstate Love Song”, “Vasoline” “Meatplow” and “Big Empty”. The increasing tension between the band due to Scott Weiland’s drug abuse dictated the temporary ending of the band in 2003. The band later reformed, again with Weiland taking the vocals, however, he was dismissed sometime later and replaced by Linkin Park’s singer Chester Bennington. After Weiland’s death in 2015 and Chester Bennington’s death in 2017, Stone Temple Pilots have announced a new singer, Jeff Gutt, despite the criticism from fans and critics for the DeLeo brothers insisting in keeping the Stone Temple Pilots an active band after the death of Scott Weiland. Robert DeLeo is also part of the Alice Cooper’s supergroup Hollywood Vampires where he plays bass. DeLeo is credited with much of the Stone Temple Pilots music, including the famous intros for the songs “Plush” and “Interstate Love Song”.
