Guns N’Roses Duff McKagan turns 60 today

Michael Andrew “Duff” McKagan was born on February 5, 1964 in Seattle, Washington. He begun his career in the local Seattle/Northwest Punk Rock scene. Searching for bigger opportunities, in 1983, McKagan moved to Los Angeles, California, with one of his brothers where he found work as an appetizer server at a Black Angus restaurant. He joined Guns N’ Roses in 1985 as the bass player and the band went on to become one of the most successful Rock acts of all time. After leaving Guns N’Roses in the mid 90’s, Duff, who already had worked on several side and solo projects, continued that path, and in 2001 he formed Velvet Revolver from the ashes of the Guns N’ Roses former members Slash and Matt Sorum, featuring former Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland. The band had successful run with hits such as Fall To Pieces” and “Slither”. Velvet Revolver disbanded in 2008 after Scott Weiland returned to Stone Temple Pilots. They reunited with Weiland for a one-off reunion show on January 12, 2012 at a benefit concert. This proved to be their last performance together before Weiland’s death on December 3, 2015. In 2016 Guns N’ Roses anounced the return of former members Slash and Duff to their line up. Duff currently tours with Guns N’ Roses but also, in addition to his musical career, McKagan has established himself as a writer. He has written weekly columns on a wide variety of topics for SeattleWeekly.com, Playboy.com, and ESPN.com. A former high school drop-out, he attended Seattle University’s Albers School of Business and Economics in the early 2000s, and subsequently founded the wealth management firm Meridian Rock. He also reconnected with the Seattle Rock scene in recent years and has played with musicians such as former Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. Duff spent several years addicted to heroin, on his biography “It’s So Easy: And Other Lies by Duff McKagan”, he tells how close he was to die from drugs and alcohol during the 1990’s. Duff was one of the last persons to see Kurt Cobain alive, when the two sat next to each other on a flight from Los Angeles to Seattle just days before Cobain committed suicide. He was inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012 as a member of Guns N’ Roses. Duff McKagan turns 60 today.
