The Genesis founder and former lead singer has had a very successful solo career since the 1970’s

The creative Peter Gabriel was born on this day in 1950

Peter Gabriel was born on February 13, 1950, in Surrey, England. He founded Genesis in 1967, but the band would only become popular during the 1970’s as one of the top progressive rock acts of the decade. Gabriel was the original lead singer and flutist, he began to draw attention in Europe due to his extravagant performances on stage that included numerous bizarre costume changes and comical, dreamlike stories told as the introduction to each song. Gabriel departed from Genesis in 1975 and begun a successful solo career that included hit songs such as “Solsbury Hill”, “Games Without Frontiers”, “Don’t Give Up”, “Big Time”, “Sledgehammer” and “Steam” among others. His highly creative music videos earned him a spotlight place on MTV during the 1980’s, the 1986 music video for “Sledgehammer”, won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards. Peter Gabriel is also a peace and humanitarian activist, and in recent years, despite his success and awarded career, he has been less active on mainstream music (including three Brit Awards, six Grammy Awards and thirteen MTV Video Music Awards) having released his latest album “New Blood”, in 2011. Today he turns 74.
