Manfred Mann’s Earth Band Prog Rock version of Springsteen’s “Blinded By The Light” goes No.1 on this day in 1977
Written by Bruce Springsteen and included on his 1973 debut album “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.” as well as released as a single, “Blinded By The Light” met it’s most popular version through British former 1960’s Pop sensation Manfred Mann, which by 1977 were known as Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, one of the biggest Prog Rock acts of the decade. Their version was released on their 1976 album “The Roaring Silence” and as a single, and, on February 19, 1977, it went No.1 on the U.S Hot 100. The Earth Band’s version features several changed lyrics. The most prominent change is in the chorus, where Springsteen’s “cut loose like a deuce” is replaced with “revved up like a deuce.” Springsteen himself has said that it was not until Manfred Mann rewrote the song to be about a “feminine hygiene product” that it became popular. It is also Springsteen’s only Number 1 single as a songwriter on the Hot 100.
