Oasis hit No.1 at the UK singles charts in 1996 with the “beatlesque” “Don’t Look Back In Anger”
It is perhaps one of Oasis’s most “beatlesque” songs, “Don’t Look Back In Anger”, released on 19 February 1996 as the fifth single from their 1995 album, “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, was written by the band’s guitarist and main songwriter, Noel Gallagher and it became the band’s second single to reach number one on the UK Singles Chart, on March 2, 1996. It was also the first Oasis single with lead vocals by Noel (who had previously only sung lead on B-sides) instead of his brother, Liam. Along with songs such as “Wonderwall”, it’s one of the band’s signature songs and besides the “beatlesque” sound, Gallagher also admits that certain lines from the song are lifted from John Lennon, after he heard Lennon stating in a tape he was going on about ‘trying to start a revolution from me bed, because they said the brains I had went to my head’, (most likely refers to Lennon’s notorious bed-ins in 1969). The piano in the introduction of the song strongly resembles Lennon’s “Imagine”, as well as “Watching the Wheels”. The music video for the song features Patrick Macnee, the actor who played John Steed in the 1960’s television series “The Avengers”, and was filmed in Pasadena, California. It features the band being driven to a mansion similar to the Playboy Mansion and performing the song there. The single was followed by another Oasis hit, “Champagne Supernova”.
