Written and produced by 80’s hitmakers Stock Aitken Waterman, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley was first released on July 27, 1987 as the first single from the British singer’s debut album, “Whenever You Need Somebody”. The song became a worldwide smash hit and by 1988 had topped the charts in 25 countries. In the U.S, started a two week run at No.1 on the Hot 100 on March 12, 1988. Along with “Whenever You Need Somebody” and “Together Forever”, “Never Gonna Give You Up” established Astley as Pop star during the late 1980’s, and as the decade came to an end, his popularity started to decrease. However, with the rise of Internet, Astley suddenly saw his popularity rising again, not for making new music, but because of “Never Gonna Give You Up” that by the late 90’s was already considered as a memory of the far distant 1980’s Pop music. During the 2000’s, the music video for the song became the basis for the “Rickrolling” meme, leading the song to also be referred to as “The Rickroll Song”, the practice had achieved notoriety on the Internet, and it increased in popularity after its use as a 2008 April Fools’ Day joke by various media companies and websites. It went as far as Astley winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Act Ever with the song in 2008, as a result of collective voting from thousands of people on the Internet, due to the popular phenomenon of Rickrolling. In 2009, the music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up” was uploaded to YouTube and counts a astonishing number of more than 1 billion views as of March 2023.
