The iconic William Shatner turns 93
For more than seven decades, the multifaceted William Shatner has been one of the most prolific actors, but also author, director and even singer.
The Canadian actor was born on March 22, 1931 in Montreal, Canada. It was during the 1960’s that he rose to stardom for his portrayal of James T. Kirk, captain of the USS Enterprise, in the “Star Trek” series. Before that, he starred in several TV shows and movies, including the lead role in one of the most famous and influential episodes of “The Twilight Zone”, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”, the story of the only passenger on an airline flight to notice a hideous creature lurking outside the plane, originally broadcast in 1963. In 1968, Shatner began his musical career, with his spoken-word album “The Transformed Man” where he delivered exaggerated, interpretive recitations of “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. His well received and acclaimed second studio album “Has Been”,only came out 36 years later, in 2004, a períod where Shatner was being discovered by younger generations as a sci-fi cult figure. The album’s most memorable song is “Common People”, a cover from Britpop band Pulp, featuring Joe Jackson. In 2011 he released his third album “Seeking Major Tom” that features mostly songs related to space adventure including David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Duran Duran’s “Planet Earth” and Elton John’s “Rocket Man” among many others, featuring artists such as Sheryl Crow, Michael Schenker, Dave Davies and Johnny Winter. His latest album “Ponder the Mystery” was released in 2013. Shatner also is an author, he has co-written several novels set in the “Star Trek” universe, one that he knows very well, and also, a series of science fiction novels called “TekWar” that were adapted for television. The iconic and cult actor, despite turning 91, keeps a very active career, appearing frequently on popular TV shows and movies, as well as more obscure ones.
