In 1967 The Turtles knock The Beatles out of the US Hot 100 No.1 with “Happy Together”
Written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, former members of the Magicians, “Happy Together” by The Turtles remains one of the most memorable pop songs of the 1960’s. Surprisingly “Happy Together” was rejected a dozen times before it was offered to The Turtles. The b and released it first as a single in February 1967, backed with “Like the Seasons”, and by March 25, it had knocked out The Beatles “Penny Lane” of the US Hot 100 No.1. It’s still regarded as The Turtles signature song, and earned the band worldwide popularity almost instantly. The Pop/Folk/Psychedelia melody of “Happy Together” was a winning formula in 1967, and to this day it’s still one of the most used songs in movies and advertisements. The Turtles also scored other hits such as “Eleanor” or “She’d Rather Be with Me”, but “Happy Together” remains their only No.1 in the U.S.
