The Prodigy get their first No.1 with the inflaming “Firestarter” in 1996
The 1990’s were prodigal for The Prodigy, no pun intended. The British Alternative/Techno band released what is still considered their most popular album “Fat Of The Land” in 1997, that earned several hits for them, but the first single from the album, “Firestarter”, was released in March 1996. The song quickly became a hit topping the charts worldwide and on March 30 it went No.1 in the UK singles charts. The Prodigy always used several samples on their compositions, especially on their first three albums “Experience” (1992), “Music For The Jilted Generation” (1994) and “The Fat Of The Land” (1997), but contrary to most Techno bands or artists, their samples often consisted of Punk or Rock songs, for “Firestarter”, the band credited Kim Deal of alt-rock group The Breeders on the looped wah-wah guitar riff in “Firestarter” which was sampled from The Breeders’ track “S.O.S.” from the album Last Splash. The drums are sampled from a remix of the song “Devotion” of the group Ten City. The “Hey Hey Hey” sample came from 1984 single “Close (to the Edit)” by Art of Noise. Then-members: Anne Dudley, Trevor Horn, J. J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan and Paul Morley also receive songwriting credits. The “Empirion Mix,” which does not include these samples, is credited solely to Howlett and Flint. The popular and sometimes controversial music video was directed by Walter Stern and was filmed in an abandoned London Underground tunnel at Aldwych. After “Firestarter”, The Prodigy released a string of hit singles from the album including “Breathe” and the controversial “Smack My Bitch Up”.
