In 1975 Minnie Riperton peaks to No.1 on the U.S Hot 100 with Stevie Wonder’s produced “Lovin’ You”
Written by Riperton and Minnie Riperton’s husband Richard Rudolph, “Lovin’ You” was produced by Rudolph and Stevie Wonder, who at the time was signed to Motown Records, and so in order to avoid contract conflicts he was credited under the pseudonym “El Toro Negro”, Spanish for “Black Bull” ( Wonder’s astrological sign is Taurus.) The famous song was first released on January 13, 1975 backed with “The Edge of a Dream” as the fourth single from Riperton’s second album “Perfect Angel”, released in 1974. On April 5, 1975, “Lovin’ You” peaked to No.1 on the U.S Hot 100, and it’s regarded as one of the first songs to top the Hot 100 chart without the help of a percussion instrument; prior examples were Jim Croce’s “Time In A Bottle” in 1973, The Beatles “Yesterday” in 1965 and “Eleanor Rigby” in 1966. The song is especially known for Riperton’s use of the high whistle register in the song’s bridge, and for the chirping songbirds heard throughout and as with the rest of the album, the keyboard backing is played by Stevie Wonder, while co-writer and husband, Richard Rudolph, played acoustic guitar for the track. “Lovin’ You” remains Minnie Riperton’s signature song (generally regarded to some as a one hit wonder.) Minnie Riperton died of cancer in 1979 at age 31.
