Remembering Rock N’Roll pioneer Carl Perkins
One of the original Rock N’Roll artists, Carl Perkins was born in Tiptonville, Tennessee on April 9, 1932. Perkins was a part of what became known as the “million dollar quartet”, which was the Sun Records group of artists that included Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Perkins. Amongst his best-known songs are “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Matchbox” and “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby”, and he played a pivotal role influencing the emerging 1960’s Rock artists including The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Called “the King of Rockabilly”, Carl Perkins was one of the first artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and also the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Perkins passed away in 1998 aged 65
