The NME Poll Winners Awards of 1965, “the greatest pop show in the world”

Back in the 1960’s it’s now amazing to think how so many iconic bands and artists gathered together in the same stage for one night. As usual, one of the most important Rock and Pop music awards ceremony was the one held by British newspaper the New Musical Express. In 1965, after having gathered in 1964 The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Hollies and Roy Orbison among others, they did it again, when on April 11, a star parade performed at the NME Pool Winners concert at London’s Wembley Empire Pool, England.  Performing that night was an outstanding line  up featuring The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Animals, The Kinks, Herman’s Hermits, Moody Blues, Them, Cilla Black, The Seekers and Donovan. According the NME, 10,000 fans filled Wembley’s Empire Pool stadium for the 3 and a half hour show, in what they called “the greatest pop show in the world.” Of The Stones performance, NME wrote: “Mick’s facial dramatics during ‘The Last Time’ are an education.” NME also reported that during The Beatles performance, “the girl next to me fell on her knees weeping.” Among the winners that night were The Rolling Stones with Best New Disc Of The Year for “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” and best British R&B Group, The Beatles, that scored several awards including World Vocal Group and Elvis Presley who won World Male Singer. The show was hosted by none less than Tony Bennett himself.
