Along with other cartoon characters created during the 1930’s and 1940’s, Daffy Duck is a timeless star that remains popular to this day through his appearances on cartoons, movies and countless merchandise worldwide. This famous black duck was created by Tex Avery and Bob Clampett, who also created other characters of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series. He was first introduced to the world on April 17, 1937 in “Porky’s Duck Hunt”, a cartoon that was also directed by Tex Avery and animated by Bob Clampett. At the time, Daffy was something new for cartoon fans, introducing a series of character traits never before used for a cartoon character. As Clampett later recalled: “At that time, audiences weren’t accustomed to seeing a cartoon character do these things. And so, when it hit the theaters it was an explosion. People would leave the theaters talking about this daffy duck.” Over the years Daffy evolved as a character, as for instance his slobbery, exaggerated lisp that was developed over time, being barely noticeable in the early cartoons. However, his voice characterization by Mel Blanc, also was one of the few aspects that have remained consistent throughout the years and remain a trademark for Daffy, being the other his black feathers with a white neck ring. Blanc’s characterization of Daffy once held the world record for the longest characterization of one animated character by his or her original actor, 52 years. More recently Daffy Duck has appeared in the 2015 movie “Looney Tunes: Rabbits Run” and in the Cartoon Network series “New Looney Tunes” where he is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. In these series, Daffy has been given the personality that Tex Avery and Bob Clampett originally gave him in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Happy 87 Daffy.
