Prince kisses the Hot 100 No.1 with “Kiss” on this day in 1986
Composed, written and produced by Prince, “Kiss” was released in February 1986 and hit No.1 at the Hot 100 on April 19 of the same year. “Kiss” became Prince’s third number-one in the US hit following 1984’s highly successful “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy”. It was also a big hit worldwide and remains one of Prince’s most popular songs. “Kiss” held a very similar song structure, beat and even in some parts, vocals, with the 1967 song “You Got To Be a Man” by Helene Smith, but despite it, there was never any plagiarism claims. “Kiss” was released on Prince’s 8th studio album, “Parade”, in 1986. In 1990, on the popular movie “Pretty Woman”, Julia Roberts performs a memorable scene where she sings along to the song while taking a bath. A popular and notable cover of the song was released in 1988 by The Art of Noise featuring Tom Jones.
