The legendary 1964 “T.A.M.I.” The show was released on theaters in the U.K on this day in 1965
The “T.A.M.I.” Show (“Teen Age Music International”) it’s one of the most legendary concerts from the Rock music history, it was held during two dates at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964 and filmed by director Steve Binder and his crew. The film, featuring highlights from the concert, was released in the U.S on December 29, 1964, and in the U.K on April 19, 1965. The free concert featured an impressive string of music stars from Rock and Soul, including emerging acts such as The Rolling Stones, James Brown, Marvin Gaye and also established acts like The Supremes, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry among others. It also featured quite a few English bands associated with the Mersey Beat scene (Liverpool), including Gerry and The Pacemakers and Billy J.Kramer and The Dakotas. One of the highlights of the concert was James Brown’s performance, which features his legendary dance moves and explosive energy. Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones has claimed that choosing to follow Brown and The Famous Flames was the biggest mistake of their careers because no matter how well they performed, they could not top him. After it’s original theatrical release, the movie was never again seen in its entirety. By the 1980’s, 20 years after the concert took place, it was felt that the film was unlikely to be released again, on home video or theaters, due to the cost of obtaining the publishing and performance rights to the extensive lineup of artists. In 1984 however was shown in its entirety in Canada on First Choice Network. Finally, on March 23, 2010, Shout! Factory released “T.A.M.I. Show” on a restored, digitally remastered and fully authorized DVD, with all performances.
