The legendary and impressive Rock producer and engineer Eddie Kramer turns 82
Born on April 19, 1942, in Cape Town, South Africa, Edwin H. Kramer, known as Eddie Kramer it’s one of the most legendary Rock music producers and engineers of all time. His impressive career includes pivotal collaborations with some of the best and most legendary names in Rock. Kramer moved to London during the 1960’s for political reasons and got his first industry job in 1962 at Advision Studios.A year later he was hired by Pye Studios where he assisted on s recordings by the Kinks, the Searchers, the Undertakers, Petula Clark, and Sammy Davis Jr. With The Beatles Kramer engineered, two Beatles hit singles which appeared on Magical Mystery Tour—”All You Need Is Love” and “Baby You’re a Rich Man”. The two songs were recorded at Olympic Studios, where, in 1967, Kramer engineered albums for the Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Traffic, and Jimi Hendrix. Kramer engineered all Jimi Hendrix and The Jimi Hendrix Experience studio albums and produced a few. His association with Jimi Hendrix remains one of his milestones to this day and part of Rock N’ Roll history. Kramer was also the assistant engineer on the Blue Cheer’s second album “Outsideinside” and on the Rolling Stones “Between the Buttons”, “Flowers”, “Their Satanic Majesties Request” and the 1968 “Beggars Banquet”. In 1968 Kramer relocated to New York, primarily to continue working with Hendrix. Headquartered first at The Record Plant and later working as an independent producer and engineer, Kramer produced the first Johnny Winter album and engineered a sequence of five Led Zeppelin albums, beginning with “Led Zeppelin II”. Kramer and his crew attended the 1969 Woodstock Festival; they recorded the entire festival in a harried, sleepless, three-day binge. The final result it’s a faithful document of the festival that can be heard and seen in both the film, Woodstock, and the three-disc album Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More. During the 1970’s his impressive career continued. In 1975 he engineered David Bowie albums “David Live” and “Young Americans”. He also produced one of the greatest Rock live albums of all time, “Alive” by KISS. Subsequently, he also produced the band’s “Alive II”, “Double Platinum”, “Rock and Roll Over”, “Love Gun”, “Alive III” as well as member Ace Frehley’s first solo album. Eddie Kramer’s career is highly active today, he continues to produce and engineer several artists and still works on Hendrix’s unreleased catalog. He also continues his involvement with cutting-edge technologies, Kramer is working with Digital Theater Systems (DTS) in the development of Headphone: X, an app which replicates 5.1, 7.1, and 11.1 Surround Sound in any type of headphone. Today Kramer turns 82.
