Fish was born Derek William Dick on April 25, 1958, in Dalkeith, Scotland. The singer rose to prominence as the lead singer of the progressive rock band Marillion in the 1980s before embarking on a successful solo career.
After joining Marillion in 1981, with his distinctive voice and poetic lyrics, he quickly became the focal point of the band’s success. Marillion’s debut album, “Script for a Jester’s Tear,” released in 1983, showcased Fish’s storytelling abilities and established the band as pioneers of the neo-progressive rock movement.
Throughout his tenure with Marillion, Fish contributed his soulful vocals to iconic albums such as “Fugazi” and “Misplaced Childhood,” which featured the hit single “Kayleigh.” His charismatic stage presence and introspective lyrics resonated with audiences worldwide, earning him a dedicated following and cementing his place in rock music history.
