Dusty Springfield scores her first and only No.1 in the UK in 1966 with “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”
Originally recorded and performed by Pino Donaggio who also co-wrote the song with lyricist Vito Pallavicini in its original Italian version “Io che non vivo (senza te)” in 1965, “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” was one of Dusty Springfield’s biggest hits. Her version remains the most popular of the song and was released in March 1966. It peaked to No.1 at the UK singles charts on April 26 of the same year. The song also scored number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and it’s the British singer most popular song in the U.S to this day. Dusty Springfield, who participated at the 1965 Sanremo Festival in Italy, was in the audience when Pino Donaggio and Miller performed “Io che non vivo (senza te)” and despite having no awareness of the lyrics’ meaning the song moved Springfield to tears who got the approval of Donaggio to record her own version of it in English. The success of the song was so big that it made the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at No.491. It also remains Dusty’s only No.1 in her native UK.
