The NME Poll Winners Awards of 1964 gathered together some of the greatest Rock bands and artists ever on one stage, including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones
One of the greatest Rock events of all time, the NME Poll Winners concert of 1964 took place on April 26, 1964, at the Empire Pool, Wembley. The outstanding line up included performances by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Hollies, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Merseybeats, Manfred Mann, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas and The Searchers among others. It also included appearances by Roy Orbison and Murray the K, and, a special message by Elvis Presley who couldn’t be present at the event. Among the winners, that evening were Brenda Lee, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Dusty Springfield, The Rolling Stones, The Animals and Mick Jagger. At the time, at their recap of the show, NME wrote: “The Rolling Stones could “hardly be heard above the shouts” whilst The Beatles’ performance was met with similar hysteria. “Paul tried in vain to announce ‘Twist And Shout’ and the number brought an even greater hurricane of stamping, cheering, crying, screaming response” Look back or watch for the first time the full event including every performance.
