Kate Pierson, the iconic musician and founding member of the groundbreaking band The B-52s, celebrates her 76th birthday today, April 27th. Born in Weehawken, New Jersey, in 1948, Pierson’s musical career began in Athens, Georgia, where she formed The B-52s in 1976 alongside Fred Schneider, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson, and Keith Strickland. With their unique blend of new wave, punk, and rockabilly influences, The B-52s quickly became darlings of the underground music scene, known for their quirky lyrics, infectious melodies, and flamboyant style.
The band’s self-titled debut album, released in 1979, catapulted them to international fame with hits like “Rock Lobster” and “Planet Claire.” Pierson’s distinctive vocals, characterized by her powerhouse voice and signature vibrato, helped define the band’s sound and set them apart from their contemporaries.
