ABBA’s first smash hit “Waterloo”, peaks to No.1 on this day in 1974
On April 1974, the Swedish group ABBA won the 19th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest that took place in Brighton, United Kingdom, with the song “Waterloo”. Back then, these future hit-makers were still an unknown band, and winning the Eurovision gave them the projection to the whole European continent. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, the Eurovision Song Contest was viewed religiously every year by millions of Europeans, a projection that helped to launch ABBA’s international career. But the Swedish team would not only conquer Europe, and, for the first time, Eurovision winners conquered a stunning global audience. “Waterloo” went No.1 in several countries worldwide in May 1974, little over a month after their winning at the song contest. In England, it peaked to No.1 on May 4, 1974. Even the U.S surrendered to the Pop appeal of ABBA songs and “Waterloo” made it to No.10 on the Hot 100. For the rest of the 1970’s decade, ABBA sold millions of records worldwide and had several No.1 singles. Despite breaking up in the early 1980’s, the band continues to enjoy a tremendous success to this day, still remaining one of the best selling artists around the globe.
