In 1981, New Romantics Adam and the Ants debuted on the UK singles charts on No.1 with “Stand and Deliver”
Written by Adam Ant and Marco Pirroni, “Stand And Deliver” was the first major hit by New Romantic/New Wave British band Adam and the Ants. Released on 27 April 1981 as the lead single from their third album “Prince Charming”, the song became not only their first No.1 on the U.K singles charts but also debuted on that exact top position on May 9, 1981 where it remained for five weeks. To this day, the estimated sales of the single in the U.K alone is of 1 million copies. However, giving their small popularity in the U.S at the time, it only reached No.38 on the U.S Dance chart, but it’s still considered one of their biggest hits. The expression “stand and deliver – your money or your life”, used in the lyrics, is commonly associated with highwaymen in 18th century England, fitting the band’s visual and cultural views at the time. At the dawn of the music video era, Adam and the Ants made one for “Stand And Deliver”, featuring Adam Ant dressed as a “dandy highwayman” who threatens his victims with the mirror image of their unfashionable selves and who is captured and escapes being hanged from the gallows with help from his accomplices, the band members. The follow up to “Stand And Deliver” proved to be an even bigger hit for the band, “Prince Charming”, and a music video was also made with a similar look and style.
