The singer Martika turns 55 today
Born as Marta Marrero on May 18, 1969, in Whittier, California, Martika, the Cuban-American singer-songwriter and actress rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s with her blend of pop and dance music, combined with her striking appearance and vocal talent.
Martika’s career began in the entertainment industry at a young age. She appeared in the children’s television show “Kids Incorporated” from 1984 to 1986, showcasing her singing and acting abilities. Her big break in the music industry came in 1988 when she signed with Columbia Records and released her self-titled debut album, “Martika.
The album included the smash hit “Toy Soldiers,” which became Martika’s signature song. Released in 1989, “Toy Soldiers” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remains her most well-known track. The song’s poignant lyrics about the struggles of addiction, combined with Martika’s emotional delivery, struck a chord with many listeners.
Following the success of her debut, Martika released her second album, “Martika’s Kitchen,” in 1991. This album featured the singles “Love… Thy Will Be Done,” a song co-written with Prince, and “Martika’s Kitchen” but was not as commercially successful as her debut.
After a brief period of intense success, Martika stepped back from the spotlight in the mid-1990s. She married musician Michael Mozart in 1997 and shifted her focus to her personal life.
In recent years, Martika has made a comeback, performing at various nostalgia concerts and 80s music festivals. She has also reconnected with her fans through social media and occasional new music releases, with “Toy Soldiers” remaining a timeless classic.
