British Pop legend Leo Sayer turns 76 today



One of the most recognizable voices in pop music, Leo Sayer was born Gerard Hugh Sayer on May 21, 1948, in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, England. With a career spanning over 50 years since it took off in the early 1970s, he initially gained attention as a songwriter, co-writing songs for other artists, but it wasn’t long before he embarked on his solo career. His debut album, “Silverbird” (1973), featured the hit single “The Show Must Go On,” which showcased his distinctive voice and theatrical style.
Leo Sayer achieved significant success throughout the 1970s with a string of memorable hits. Some of his biggest songs include “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” and “When I Need You,” both from his 1976 album “Endless Flight.” “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1978, and “When I Need You” topped charts around the world, becoming one of his signature ballads. Another notable hit, “Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance),” displayed his versatility and knack for catchy, upbeat tunes.
In the 1980s, Sayer continued to produce music and tour, although his commercial success began to wane compared to his peak in the previous decade. Nevertheless, he remained a beloved figure in the music industry, known for his energetic performances and enduring hits. Sayer also expanded his horizons by appearing on television and engaging in various music-related projects.
In recent years, Leo Sayer has experienced a resurgence in popularity. He has continued to perform live, delighting audiences with his classic hits and new material. Sayer’s enduring appeal was highlighted by his 2006 album “Voice in My Head” and his participation in the reality TV show “Celebrity Big Brother” in the UK. His 2019 album “Selfie” demonstrated his ongoing creativity and ability to adapt to contemporary musical trends.
