Legendary soul diva Patti LaBelle turns 80 today
Legendary soul diva Patti LaBelle was born Patricia Louise Holt-Edwards on May 24th, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The songstress turns 76 today, and we salute and pay tribute to her historic career in music. Patti became the frontwoman for the group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles in 1963. Never one to let anything stand in the way of her musical dreams, by the late ’70s she’d moved on to form the group Labelle, whose song “Lady Marmalade” became her first bona fide hit. LaBelle went on to find mega solo success in the early ’80s, earning multiple Grammy awards, an American Music Award and an Emmy. In a career that has spanned over fifty years, she has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. LaBelle has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. In 2005, the World Music Awards recognized her years in the music business by awarding her the Legend Award. LaBelle was included in Rolling Stone on their list of 100 Greatest Singers. Today we celebrate a woman who has sung her way into a special place in America’s heart. We will forever thank her for romantic classics like “On My Own,” “If Only You Knew” and “Somebody Loves You Baby.”
