Sir Ian McKellen was born on May 25, 1939, in Burnley, Lancashire, England. Growing up in a family that valued the arts, McKellen was exposed to theater from a young age. His passion for acting was nurtured during his education at Bolton School and later at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature and participated in numerous theatrical productions.
McKellen’s professional acting career began in the early 1960s with performances in repertory theaters across the UK. He quickly gained a reputation for his powerful presence and versatility on stage. In 1965, he joined Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company, where he honed his craft and took on a variety of classical roles. McKellen’s early stage work included notable performances in Shakespearean plays such as “Macbeth” and “Richard II.”
Ian McKellen’s career spans several decades and encompasses a wide range of roles in theater, film, and television. Some of his most memorable work includes Gandalf in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies – McKellen’s portrayal of the wise and powerful wizard Gandalf is one of his most iconic roles and his performance in Peter Jackson’s epic adaptations brought him international fame and earned him critical acclaim, Magneto in the “X-Men” film series – as the complex and charismatic mutant leader, McKellen brought depth and gravitas to the character of Magneto, becoming a favorite among fans of the superhero genre, Richard III (1995) – McKellen adapted, co-wrote, and starred in this modernized film version of Shakespeare’s play. His chilling performance as the titular character was widely praised and showcased his ability to bring classical theater to contemporary audiences, “Gods and Monsters” (1998) – McKellen’s portrayal of director James Whale in this biographical drama earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The film explores Whale’s later years and his relationship with a young gardener, played by Brendan Fraser.
In recent years, McKellen has continued to work in both film and theater. He reprised his role as Gandalf in “The Hobbit” trilogy and appeared in various other films, including “Mr. Holmes” (2015), where he played an aging Sherlock Holmes. McKellen has also returned to the stage, delivering acclaimed performances in productions such as “King Lear” and “No Man’s Land” alongside his longtime friend and fellow actor Sir Patrick Stewart.
McKellen remains active in the entertainment industry, continuously taking on new and challenging roles. His dedication and his ability to captivate audiences with his performances have solidified his status as one of the greatest actors of his generation.
Ian McKellen is openly gay and has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. He came out publicly in 1988 during a BBC radio discussion on the controversial Section 28, a British law that prohibited the promotion of homosexuality. McKellen’s activism has been a significant part of his life, and he has used his platform to campaign for equality and acceptance.
McKellen was knighted in 1991 for his services to the performing arts and was made a Companion of Honour in the 2008 New Year Honours. He has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including multiple Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, and several nominations for Academy Awards and Golden Globes.
