The “Empress of Soul” Gladys Knight celebrates 80 today




Often referred to as the “Empress of Soul,” Gladys Knight was born on May 28, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Her powerful voice and emotive delivery have made her one of the most beloved and respected figures in the music industry.
Gladys Knight’s career began at a very young age, by the time she was seven, she had won a singing contest on the popular television show “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour.” In 1952, she formed a group with her brother Merald “Bubba” Knight, sister Brenda Knight, and cousins Eleanor and William Guest. This group eventually became known as Gladys Knight & the Pips.
In the early 1960s, the group signed with Motown Records, where they enjoyed their first major success. Their distinct blend of soulful melodies and heartfelt performances quickly garnered them a dedicated following. Among some of their best known work are “Every Beat of My Heart” (1961), “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” (1967), “If I Were Your Woman” (1970) and “Midnight Train to Georgia” (1973) which became their signature song and a Grammy-winning hit.
In the mid-1970s, Gladys Knight & the Pips left Motown for Buddah Records, where they continued to produce hits and evolve their sound. The group enjoyed sustained success throughout the 1970s and 1980s with several more chart-topping singles and albums including “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination” (1973),
“Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me” (1974), “Save the Overtime (For Me)” (1983) and “Love Overboard” (1987) which won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal,
Gladys Knight has continued to perform and record music well into the 21st century. Her enduring appeal and timeless voice have kept her in demand as a live performer. In addition to her music career, Knight has made numerous appearances on television and in film, showcasing her versatility as an entertainer. In 2019, she performed the national anthem at Super Bowl LIII, demonstrating her ongoing relevance and popularity. Knight also remains active in various philanthropic efforts, leveraging her fame to support causes she is passionate about.
A timeless influence on artists around the world, her contributions to music have earned her a place among the greatest voices of all time. Today she celebrates 80.
