Remembering the New Romantic icon Steve Strange
A prominent figure in the New Romantic movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Steve Strange was born Steven John Harrington on May 28, 1959, in Newbridge, Wales. As the lead singer of the band Visage, Strange became a symbol of the era’s flamboyant style and synthesizer-driven music.
Steve Strange began his career in the punk scene before transitioning to the burgeoning New Romantic movement. In the late 1970s, he managed the Blitz Club in London, a hotspot for fashion-forward youths and a breeding ground for the New Romantic scene. The club attracted future stars like Boy George and Spandau Ballet.
In 1978, Strange co-founded Visage with musicians Rusty Egan and Midge Ure. The band quickly gained attention with their innovative blend of synthesizers and stylish visuals. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1980, included the breakthrough single “Fade to Grey,” which became a defining anthem of the New Romantic era and remains their most memorable song.
After Visage disbanded in 1985, Strange continued to influence the music and fashion scenes. He attempted several comebacks and reformed Visage in the 2000s, releasing new music that sought to recapture the magic of their early days. The band’s 2013 album, “Hearts and Knives,” marked a notable return, receiving positive reviews from fans and critics alike.
Steve Strange was known not only for his music but also for his distinctive androgynous fashion sense, which became synonymous with the New Romantic movement. His bold style choices and theatrical performances left a lasting impact on the music and fashion industries.
Strange faced personal challenges, including struggles with addiction, which he openly discussed in his autobiography, “Blitzed!,” published in 2002. Despite these struggles, he remained a beloved figure in the music community.
Steve Strange passed away on February 12, 2015, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, at the age of 55. His death was attributed to a heart attack.
