The actor, writer, and director Rupert Everett celebrates 64 today

The distinguished English actor, writer, and director Rupert Everett, was born on May 29, 1959, in Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk, England. Known for his wit, charm, and versatile acting skills, Everett has enjoyed a diverse and accomplished career in film, television, and theatre.
Rupert Everett began his acting career in the late 1970s after training at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He first gained significant attention with his role in the 1981 West End production of “Another Country,” portraying the openly gay schoolboy Guy Bennett. The play was a critical and commercial success, leading to a film adaptation in 1984, in which Everett reprised his role, further establishing his reputation as a talented actor. He also starred in “Dance with a Stranger” (1985), “The Comfort of Strangers” (1990) and “The Madness of King George” (1994).
Everett’s breakthrough in Hollywood came with the 1997 romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” where he played George Downes, the witty and supportive friend of Julia Roberts’ character. His performance was widely praised, earning him a Golden Globe nomination and solidifying his status as a leading actor in both the UK and the US.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Rupert Everett continued to showcase his versatility with roles in a variety of genres. He starred in films such as “An Ideal Husband” (1999), “The Next Best Thing” (2000), and provided the voice for Prince Charming in the animated films “Shrek 2” (2004) and “Shrek the Third” (2007).
Rupert Everett has continued to work in both film and theatre, and has also ventured into writing and directing. His directorial debut came with the 2018 film “The Happy Prince,” in which he also starred as Oscar Wilde. The film, which Everett also wrote, received critical acclaim for its sensitive and poignant portrayal of Wilde’s later years.
Everett remains active in the entertainment industry, appearing in various television series and stage productions. His recent work includes roles in the TV series “The Name of the Rose” (2019) and “Adult Material” (2020).
Rupert Everett has been openly gay since the late 1980s, a decision that was considered bold and risky in the entertainment industry at the time. He has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has often spoken about the challenges and discrimination faced by gay actors in Hollywood.
In addition to his acting career, Everett is a published author, having written several memoirs, including “Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins” (2006) and “Vanished Years” (2012), which offer candid insights into his life and career.
From his early days on the stage to his acclaimed film roles and directorial projects, Everett has proven himself to be a dynamic and enduring presence in the world of entertainment.
