The British musician, singer and songwriter Noel Gallagher turns 57 today
Known primarily as the lead guitarist and chief songwriter for the rock band Oasis, Noel Gallagher, was born on May 29, 1967, in Manchester, England. Noel Gallagher’s early life in Manchester was marked by a love for music, inspired by bands like The Beatles, The Smiths, and The Stone Roses and after working various jobs, including a stint as a roadie for the band Inspiral Carpets, Gallagher joined his younger brother Liam’s band, Oasis, in 1991. His arrival marked a turning point for the group, as Noel brought with him a wealth of original songs and a clear musical vision.
Oasis quickly gained a following with their energetic live performances and catchy, anthemic songs. Their debut album, “Definitely Maybe,” released in 1994, became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history at the time. Tracks like “Live Forever” and “Supersonic” became instant classics, establishing Gallagher as one of the leading songwriters of his generation. Oasis’s success continued through the 1990s, with their second album, “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” that featured the hits “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” and “Champagne Supernova,” becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. Noel Gallagher’s songwriting prowess and the band’s rivalry with Blur defined the Britpop era, capturing the cultural zeitgeist of the time. In 1997 the band released the album “Be Here Now” known for its ambitious sound and hits like “D’You Know What I Mean?”
Despite internal tensions and a turbulent relationship with his brother Liam, Noel Gallagher remained the creative force behind Oasis until their split in 2009. After Oasis disbanded, Noel embarked on a solo career, forming Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2011, received critical acclaim and commercial success, featuring singles like “The Death of You and Me” and “If I Had a Gun…”.
Other best known work include the albums “Chasing Yesterday” (2015) – which included hits like “In the Heat of the Moment” and “Ballad of the Mighty I” and “Who Built the Moon?” (2017) that explored an experimental sound with tracks like “Holy Mountain” and “It’s a Beautiful World.”
