The Beatles score their fourth U.S No.1 with “Love Me Do” in 1964

The Beatles debut single, “Love Me Do” was primarily written by Paul McCartney in 1958–1959 while truant from school at age 16 and later credited to Lennon–McCartney. It was first released as a single in October 1962 in the U.K and later on April 27, 1964, in the U.S. The song was included on The Beatles 1963 debut album “Please Please Me”, as one of the strongest tracks. The highly influential song, that features the Lennon Harmonica playing, reportedly influenced by the 1961 American hit song “Hey! Baby” by Bruce Channel, was first recorded with drummer Pete Best but ended up not approved by producer George Martin. It was only after that Ringo Starr recorded the drums for the song, this version became the first one released on Parlophone in the UK on 5 October 1962, however, the most popular version ended up being the one with drummer Andy White, also included on the “Please Please Me” album and the American release of the single. Ringo can be heard on that version playing the tambourine. The Ringo Starr drumming version can be mostly found in rarities compilations released over the years. On May 30, 1964 “Love Me Do” became The Beatles fourth single to reach No.1 in the U.S. in only five months.
