Alanis Morissette turns 50 today

Alanis Morissette was born Alanis Nadine Morissette on June 1, 1974, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. From a young age, Morissette exhibited a deep passion for music, which led her to start playing the piano at six and writing songs by the age of nine. She recorded her first demo, “Fate Stay With Me,” when she was only ten years old.
Morissette’s early career began in Canada with two dance-pop albums: “Alanis” (1991) and “Now Is the Time” (1992). While these albums showcased her vocal talent, they achieved moderate success. It wasn’t until she moved to Los Angeles and transitioned to a more alternative rock sound that her career skyrocketed.
In 1995, Morissette released “Jagged Little Pill,” an album that catapulted her to international fame. The album, featuring hits like “You Oughta Know,” “Ironic,” and “Hand in My Pocket,” resonated with millions for its raw emotional honesty and distinct blend of rock and confessional lyrics. “Jagged Little Pill” sold over 33 million copies worldwide and earned Morissette numerous awards, including four Grammy Awards.
Following the monumental success of “Jagged Little Pill,” Morissette released several more albums, such as “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie” (1998), “Under Rug Swept” (2002), and “Flavors of Entanglement” (2008). Each project showcased her evolving artistry, tackling themes ranging from personal growth to social and political issues.
In recent years, Morissette has continued to make music, releasing “Such Pretty Forks in the Road” in 2020. Beyond her music career, she has ventured into acting, appearing in TV shows like “Weeds” and “Up All Night,” and making notable contributions to Broadway. The “Jagged Little Pill” musical, which debuted in 2019, received critical acclaim and several Tony Award nominations.
Alanis Morissette married rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway in 2010, and the couple has three children: Ever, Onyx, and Winter. Throughout her life, she has been open about her struggles with mental health, including postpartum depression, and has become an advocate for mental wellness.
