Wham! gets their first No.1 single in 1984 with “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”
As with all of Wham! songs, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” was written by George Michael and released as a single on May 14, 1984. The song became one of the famous pop duo’s signature songs and their first UK No.1, when it peaked to the top position on June 2, 1984. It also provided their first U.S no.1 and charted high in many other countries. According George Michael, the song, which was included on Wham! second album “Make It Big”, was inspired by a scribbled note that his Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley had left for his parents, intended to read “wake me up before you go” but with “up” accidentally written twice, so Ridgeley wrote “go” twice on purpose. The now iconic 1980’s music video showcases the band performing for an audience of mostly teenagers at Brixton Academy in South London. The band was wearing Katharine Hamnett t-shirt designs that said “CHOOSE LIFE”. Wham! had a string of smash hits during the 1980’s that also included “Last Christmas”, “Freedom”, “Everything She Wants”, “I’m Your Man” and “Edge Of Heaven” among others. George Michael passed away aged 53 in 2016.
