Suzi Quatro, was born Susan Kay Quatro on June 3, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Growing up in a musical family, she was exposed to the world of music from a young age. Her father, Art Quatro, was a jazz musician, and her siblings also pursued musical careers, creating a vibrant and supportive environment for her burgeoning talent.
Suzi Quatro’s musical career began in the mid-1960s when she joined the all-female garage rock band, The Pleasure Seekers, alongside her sister Patti. The band gained local popularity, releasing singles like “What a Way to Die,” which showcased Suzi’s raw energy and talent. In 1971, Suzi moved to England after being spotted by record producer Mickie Most. This move marked a pivotal turn in her career.
In the early 1970s, Suzi Quatro signed with the RAK Records label and collaborated with songwriters and producers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1973, included the hit single “Can the Can,” which topped the charts in several countries. This success was followed by other chart-topping hits such as “48 Crash,” “Daytona Demon,” and “Devil Gate Drive.” Suzi’s blend of glam rock and hard rock, combined with her leather-clad image and bass-playing prowess, made her a trailblazer for women in rock music.
Throughout the 1970s, Suzi Quatro continued to release successful albums and singles, and her impact extended beyond music; she made notable appearances on the popular TV show “Happy Days” as the character Leather Tuscadero, which expanded her fan base and showcased her versatility as an entertainer.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Suzi Quatro explored different musical styles and continued to perform and record music. Albums such as “Rock Hard” and “Unreleased Emotion” demonstrated her ability to evolve with the times while maintaining her distinctive style. Beyond music, Suzi pursued acting and appeared in various stage productions and television shows.
In recent years, Suzi Quatro has remained active in the music industry, continuing to tour and release new material. Her 2019 album “No Control” was received with positive reviews.
Suzi Quatro has been married twice. Her first marriage was to guitarist Len Tuckey, with whom she has two children. The couple divorced in 1992. In 1993, she married German concert promoter Rainer Haas. Suzi’s personal life has often been intertwined with her professional career, as she balanced family responsibilities with her relentless pursuit of music. Today she celebrates 74.
