Tom Jones turns 84 today
Sir Thomas John Woodward, known to the world as Tom Jones, was born on June 7, 1940, in Glamorgan, Wales. His career has now spanned six decades, from his emergence during the 1960’s with a string of top hits, regular touring, appearances in Las Vegas from 1967–2011, his own TV Shows and career comebacks. Jones owns one of the most recognizable voices in music. In 2008, the New York Times called Jones a musical “shapeshifter”, who could “slide from soulful rasp to pop croon, with a voice as husky as it was pretty” due to the diverse styles he has covered, including, pop, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, soul, and gospel. Jones has sold over 100 million records throughout his impressive career has with thirty-six Top 40 hits in the United Kingdom and nineteen in the United States. Some of his best-known hits are “It’s Not Unusual”, “What’s New Pussycat”, “Delilah”, “Green, Green Grass of Home”, “Daughter of Darkness”, “She’s a Lady”, “Kiss”, and “Sex Bomb”. Tom Jones had his first internationally successful television variety show titled This Is Tom Jones from 1969 to 1971, where he did a memorable duet of the song “Raise Your Hand” with Janis Joplin. Among his accomplishments, Jones received a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1966, an MTV Video Music Award in 1989, and two Brit Awards: Best British Male in 2000 and the Outstanding Contribution to Music award in 2003. Jones was awarded an OBE in 1999 and in 2006 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music. Tom Jones remains one of the most active men in the music business and in recent years he also has starred on TV shows including the U.K The Voice as a coach. Today he turns 84.
