Tears For Fears score their first U.S No.1 in 1985 with “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”

Written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley, and Chris Hughes, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” was Tears For Fears ninth single release in the United Kingdom and the third from their second LP “Songs from the Big Chair”. In the US, it was the lead single from the album and gave the band their first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit on 8 June 1985, remaining there for two weeks. The song remains one of the most popular from the 1980’s, it was a success worldwide when it was first released and together with “Shout” it’s one of Tears For Fears signature songs. In 1986, the song won “Best Single” at the Brit Awards. According to Roland Orzabal, it was producer Chris Hughes who convinced him to try recording the song, in a calculated effort to gain American chart success.
