Johnny Depp turns 61 today, look back at his life and career with his 5 landmark films and a 7 must see films
With a career that now spanning for 40 years now, Johnny Depp first came to prominence during the 1980’s but acting was not his first career choice…
The often controversial Johnny Depp was born John Christopher Depp II on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, moving to Los Angeles in pursuit of a record deal in 1982 with his band The Kids who released their debut album “Young Man’s Blues” in 1983 on Geffen Records. His first wife introduced him to Nicolas Cage who convinced him to pursue an acting career. His debut as an actor was on the Wes Craven’s horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 where he played Glenn, one of the teenagers haunted by Freddy Krueger.
The movie was a success and Depp became the most successful actor to come out of the young actors cast and later in 1991 would comeback with a brief cameo in “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare”. He later appeared in the acclaimed Oliver Stone’s war film “Platoon” in 1986 and from 1987 to 1991 played one of the lead roles in the popular TV series “21 Jump Street”. In 1990 he got the lead role in the Time Burton’s classic “Edward Scissorhands”, that establish him then as one of the most popular and in demand actors in the film industry. This was followed by a series of successful films throughout the 90’s until the present day.
A versatile actor, over the last 30 years Depp has appeared in several Tim Burton’s films including “Ed Wood”, “Sleepy Hollow”, ” Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”, “Dark Shadows”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Alice in Wonderland” among several others. In 1991 he got the lead role in the now John Waters cult film “Cry Baby”, and still in the 90’s in the acclaimed films “Benny and Joon”, ” Dead Man”, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”, “Don Juan DeMarco” alongside Marlon Brando, “Arizona Dream”, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and a second time alongside Marlon Brando in “The Brave”.
In 2003 Depp played one of his most popular characters, Captain Jack Sparrow in the Walt Disney adventure film “Pirates of the Caribbean” and has appeared in every sequel since. Depp also has starred in acclaimed films that haven’t turned out to be blockbusters such as the Roman Polanski’s horror thriller “The Ninth Gate” and “Chocolate”. Also in recent years Depp has became again focused in his professional music career and is part of Alice Cooper’s supergroup Hollywood Vampires where he plays guitar. Not everything turned out as well as his career in Depp’s private life and over the years he has been married and divorced several times. He was engaged several years to actress Winona Ryder during the 90’s, one of the decade’s most famous couples, and also with British Top Model Kate Moss, but both relationships came to an end as he met French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis. After separating from Paradis, he married the actress and model Amber Heard. The marriage ended in controversy with Heard filling for divorce on May 23, 2016, and obtaining a temporary restraining order against him, stating in her court declaration that he had been “verbally and physically abusive” throughout their relationship. Depp has experienced alcoholism and addiction for much of his life and Amber Heard claimed that Depp “plunged into the depths of paranoia and violence after bingeing on drugs and alcohol, however the much mediatic trial of Depp vs Heard in 2022 concluded the actor was not guilty from Heard’s domestic violence claims, after evidence shown in court that pointed to Depp being the victim instead. With a wide global support for Depp, the mediatic trial boosted the actor’s fame even more.
